On Human Rights

Sam van der Hoeven

"According to the United Nations, human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, and the right to work and education" (Google Generative AI, 2024).

The notion of "human rights" comes from a small view God, and by extension a disproportionally obtuse view of man. It downplays the severity of man's treachery against God. Like the religious authorities in Copernicus' day, it makes man the center of the solar system, a gravitational focal point around which God must orbit. Yet God made man for an express purpose: to enjoy God. Any "rights" man could legitimately claim were abdicated when he rejected that purpose.

If people want to talk about national rights, certain privileges associated with belonging to a specific nation, great. Let's talk about that and come up with some ideas that advance human flourishing. But no man is entitled to anything except eternal damnation in hell. And only the blood of Jesus Christ can purchase exemption.
